WAYS TO HELP CHILDREN SUCCEED

Make sure they have a healthy breakfast

Make sure they get plenty of rest

Check your child’s planner EVERY day

Make sure homework is completed AND turned in – contact your child’s teacher by phone or e-mail (543-7614 or teacher’s first initial and last name; example: jharrison@bullitt.k12.ky.us or go to Bernheim’s website and find your child’s teacher)

Ask open ended questions – rephrase the question so they CANNOT answer with a simple "yes" or "no"

"Listen" for what is not said – watch their body language, the way they react to what you say or ask, etc.

If you "see" something unusual for your child, contact your child’s teacher(s) or counselor, they can let you know if it is normal or something to be concerned about and also give them a "head’s up" if something is going on

Show your child that you value them and their education by treating those around you in a positive, respectful manner – including school personnel (even if you get SOOOO MAD, remember that their eyes are always on us, & especially remember this if you are around someone else’s child!)

Volunteer at school – just give them their space when you are there, realize they are "spreading their wings" toward independence and keep the reigns "pulled" just where they are needed

Know who their friends are and what they are doing (sex, drugs and alcohol don’t usually happen when responsible adults are around)

Give yourself and your child a voice, serve on SBDM committees or be a PTSA Officer, your input is much needed and appreciated

Be supportive of school policies and procedures – if you don’t agree then get involved and work at making changes that positively impact everyone

Look for the positives in every situation (they really ARE there!)

If you have a concern or problem with school, please follow the steps for resolution – contact the teacher, counselor, principal, and/or one or both of the SBDM Parent Representatives

If there is still no resolution, then contact your School Board Member and/or Central Office

Remember, the way we handle "things" is the way we teach our children to handle "things." Be a positive role model so we can ALL be winners!
