STUDENT DRESS

Old Mill does not have a “uniform” dress code, but there are clothing items we do not allow students to wear to school. Your child should have brought home this information recently, and it is also contained in the parent/student handbook all students received at the beginning of the year. These guidelines are intended to create a safe and educationally centered environment for our students. One of the “new” items students are beginning to wear to school are “wheelie” shoes. These shoes have wheels in the sole of each shoe. Most of the time the wheels are covered by a plastic covering, but we are beginning to see large very hard plastic soles on some of these shoes with large wheels that come out when a button is pushed. I think you know what happens when a student gets in the restroom or in the hallway with these shoes. Please do not allow your child to wear these to school. We will let you know if they do and will ask you to bring them safe school appropriate shoes.

CONGRATULATIONS:

Becky Todd, volunteer coordinator, for receiving the “outstanding graduate student service award” from the University of Louisville. Ms. Todd has been working toward a degree in Occupational Training and Development from the U of L. Congratulations Ms. Todd!!!!!

PARKING LOT

It looks like our temporary gravel parking lot will be in use through the end of the school year. With the Bullitt East project continuing, the black top will probably not be in place until the entire project is completed. Please feel free to use this lot if you need to come into the building during the day. When exiting, please be careful and watch for children and buses entering the area. Hopefully, when school begins next August, that area will be a newly asphalted parking lot.

THANK YOU TO TROOP/PACK 333

I hope you have notice how nice the front entry by the flag pole is looking. The boys from troop/pack #333 have been taking great care of our school all year long. They have been involved in a service project to help beautify the school and the grounds. Throughout the year they have picked up trash, helped to spread mulch, and planted flowers. Our new “garden area” at the rear of the school by the new wing is very beautiful, thanks to an Eagle scout project being completed by Bobby Long.  Thanks to the boys and their leaders for this yearlong project.

CLASS BASKETBALL GAMES

We completed our class basketball games, a little late than in the past, but everyone participated and had a great time. Thank you for your donations, which will go to the American Cancer’s Relay for Life. Thanks to all the parent volunteers who helped Mrs. Lowery and our teachers during this event.

KINDERGARTEN PARENT NIGHT

Parents of 07/08 kindergarten parents are invited to a “Parent University” sponsored by our Family Resource Center. This meeting will help incoming parents understand the kindergarten expectations and maybe answer some questions. The current kindergarten teachers will be here to share some information about kindergarten. The meeting will be Thursday, May 10 at 6:00 p.m. in the school’s library.

TEACHER APPRECIATION LUNCHEON
Please remember to send in your dishes for the teacher appreciation luncheon this Thursday.

Thank You

SBDM PARENT NOMINATIONS AND ELECTION
You received information about nominations for the 2007-2008 Old Mill Site Based Decision Making council (SBDM). The deadline for receiving the nominations is Thursday, May 10. The council is responsible for many decisions that make Old Mill the great school it is. Parental involvement is vital to continue the progress. If you have misplaced the official nomination form, you may nominate yourself by writing your wishes to be nominated and getting it to the office before May 10. The election will be May 29 prior to the music concert at 6:30. If you have questions, contact Mr. Firquin at school.

STATE ASSESSMENTS
We have finally completed the required state assessments. Our attendance was excellent during the testing window. Thank you for your assistance and encouragement. From all reports from staff the students came to school with a positive attitude and gave their best efforts. We believe they were prepared to do well, and given their effort, the scores will be what is expected– higher than last year.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK -

                                                   Rod Firquin

By the time you receive this newsletter, you may already know that I have decided that this will be my last year as principal at Old Mill. I have decided to retire at the end of July.

It has been a decision I have contemplated throughout this school year. Many factors went into my decision , some professional, but most family related and personal. Now just seems like the right time for me to catch up on the many things I have not had time to do and explore new things to challenge me. I will miss many things about being the principal of Old Mill. The thing I will miss most are the great students who have attended Old Mill. I believe there are no better kids anywhere than in Mt. Washington. I have spent the last 21 years working with the students  and  parents who live here and send their children to the schools in this community. It is truly a “community”, supportive and involved in their children’s lives.

I appreciate all the support, encouragement, and involvement in all the school programs at Old Mill. I will always believe I have been blessed by being associated with a great group of students, parents, and staff.

Thank you and God Bless.
