HISTORY OF RIVERVIEW HIGH SCHOOL

Riverview High School began in the fall of 1993 at the former Shepherdsville Middle School building. This building served as our home until March 1997 when a flood forced us to find a new place to learn. Shepherdsville First Baptist Church provided our staff and students with space for the first weeks following the flood. After returning from spring break, we moved into Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and stayed there until the school year ended. As school began in August 1997, the students and staff found themselves in learning cottages (mobile units) and these cottages served as our school until January 1999. At that time we moved into our new building located beside the Bullitt County Area Technology Center.
The school provides an alternative path toward graduation for students who are academically at-risk as well as students who have dropped out but want to re-enroll in school. The student teacher ratio is low to provide individual help to all students. Students are to work at a pace comfortable for them but steady enough to earn at least one full credit every six weeks.
Riverview High School has been visited by several surrounding school districts in Kentucky who are interested in implementing a program such as ours in their own system.
The success experienced by students during the fifteen year history of Riverview High School should be an inspiration to others who need a "non-traditional" approach to completing their high school education.
